The main resorts are located in the north of the state, but also in the south there are places which have great tourism potential due to their natural resources. The main resorts are:
Cancún: is the main beach destination of the country and is recognized worldwide as a first class resort. Its main attractions are the beaches and sea which are of exceptional beauty, archaeological surrounding areas, entertainment centers, and commercial and tourist services.
Cozumel: is one of the major beach destinations in the country. It is recognized worldwide for its beautiful sea and beaches and it is the capital of scuba diving in its coral reefs. It has archaeological ruins and lush vegetation. It has an extensive hotel and tourism services infrastructure.
Playa del Carmen: is a tourist resort that has greatly expanded recently due to the amount of hotel facilities and services that have been created. It has attractive jungle, sea, beaches, reefs and archaeological remains.
The Mayan Riviera: Comprises the coast from Cancun to Tulum, where exceptionally beautiful natural sites are located along the beaches, sea, coral reefs and archaeological sites. In this area first class resorts are located and there is a great demand to establish new tourism developments. Some of the sites are Akumal, Puerto Aventuras, Chemuyil, Xcacel, Punta Piedra, Pamul, Xel Ha, Xcaret, Tulum, among others.
Isla Mujeres: is a small island located across from Cancun, with all the natural attractions of the region and with the advantage of the tranquility of its surroundings. It possesses an adequate hotel and tourism services infrastructure.
Chetumal: is a quiet town with all the services and hotel infrastructure. It can be considered as a base for visiting tourist sites of natural beauty such as Bacalar, Palmar, Xcalac, Mahahual, etc and important archaeological sites like Kohunlich, Dzibanché and Kinichná.
The Costa Maya: Comprises the coast of Punta Herrero Xcalac where you have the natural beauty of the Caribbean and also archaeological ruins. Currently its tourism development is just beginning, but with the introduction of basic services such as electricity, drinking water and paved roads, it is expected that the dynamics of state tourism will be successfully introduced to this area in the short term.
